|Examples of Tressy|
American Character Tressy
Tressy started in 1963 in the USA by a company called American Character. There were four versions lasting until 1965. The first type of doll created was called the V leg Tressy as when she sat down her legs formed a V shape and was most unladylike so she was modified for the next version and called the straight leg Tressy. The third version had what is known as the Mary Make up face (like her short haired friend) which was coated with a special coating so make up could be applied. Fourth edition USATressy had bendable legs. Tressy was produced with seven different hair colours: platinum blonde, lemon blonde, ash blonde, auburn, red, brown and brunette. There was also a black Tressy produced and is the hardest doll to find.
In the UK Palitoy produced 4 versions of Tressy. The first version in 1964 had a face not unlike the American Character Tressy, the second had pouty lips. Third Tressy had bendable legs and an inbuilt hair turn key. Fourth edition was very sweet looking with bendable joints, an inbuilt key and gripping hands.
Tressy was also made by Bella in France.
Tressy's Secret Strand
Tressy's hair extended by pressing the button in her tummy and pulling out the 'secret strand'. The hair wound back by using a special key in a slot in her back (for the early versions). These fitted onto Tressy's stand. However the keys were not very strong and easily lost. Extra keys could be purchased but eventually Palitoy changed the mechanism to an integral wind up mechanism in the doll's back.
